What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos: Outfit Tips for Every Season

Planning your engagement session and wondering what to wear? Choosing the right outfits for your engagement photos can make a huge difference in how your images turn out. Whether you're going for cozy winter vibes, soft spring tones, fun summer outfits, or rich fall colors, this guide covers the best engagement photo outfit ideas for every season. From what colors photograph well to how to coordinate with your partner, you'll find everything you need to feel confident and look great in front of the camera.

CHOOSING PATTERNS
Bold, busy patterns can be tempting, but they usually don’t photograph well. If you really want to wear a pattern, keep it subtle—and have your partner wear something solid or neutral so you don’t clash.

PLAN FOR THE SEASON

Winter:
Bundle up! Think beanies, scarves, coats, layers, warm socks, and boots that are easy to walk in—especially if we’re shooting in the snow. Cold feet can make the whole session miserable and often the mountains have feet of snow. Layers not only keep you warm but also add texture and interest to your outfit. Don’t be afraid to accessorize—scarves, gloves, and hats are perfect for the season and look great in photos. Just keep in mind it can get pretty chilly in the mountains, but the winter scenery makes it so worth it.

Spring & Summer:
Stick with mostly neutrals, but feel free to add in soft seasonal colors—like dusty pinks, baby blues, or muted purples. Spring in Utah can sometimes feel like a second winter, especially in the mountains where snow can hang around until May or even June. If you're hoping for snow-free photos, choosing a valley location or a lower canyon location might be a better option until early June.

Fall:
Bring on the fall tones—rust, deep greens, browns, blacks, rich reds. Just try not to blend in too much with the foliage. Neutral colors always look great - think cream, white, tan, olive green, & navy. Sweaters, boots, and layered pieces are perfect here. Accessories like hats, scarves, or some fun necklaces are a great way to finish your look.

HOW TO COORDINATE OUTFITS
Try to complement each other rather than match. Avoid wearing the exact same colors—coordinating looks a lot better than twinning.

Some of my favorite color combos:

  • Light blue & white

  • Black & tan

  • Gray & dark green

  • Olive green & cream

PICKING COLORS
Neutrals always photograph well. Think: white, black, gray, cream, tan, brown, navy, olive, or other muted greens.

Colors to avoid? Bright red (it can reflect on your skin), neon tones, hot pink, bright orange, and vibrant yellow. These tend to distract from the overall feel of the photos and don’t play as nicely with natural light. They also are the first thing your eye will be drawn to instead of your face or the scenery. We want your clothes to help make YOU the star of the show.
